About Wilderness

As far back as the late 1800s Wilderness established itself as the ideal seaside holidays destination. A seaside boarding house was started in an old homestead – and so began the tradition of hospitality which is still prevailing today and has made this small resort town world famous.

The year-round climate is splendid with sunny days and temperatures that rarely drop below 8 degrees Celsius. Annual rainfall on average is 700mm and spread throughout. The balmy weather creates an outdoor-live style that draws locals and visitors, young and old, to the stretches of sandy white beaches

Should you wish to venture off the beach there are a variety of eateries, craft stalls, shops and art galleries to explore. Wander through the quiet forest where giant Yellowwood trees rise towards the skyline, follow Bushbuck and Duiker along quiet forest paths or watch out for the brilliant flash of crimson as a Knysna Loerie is startled from its resting place.
Wilderness not only overlooks the sea, but also the placid lagoon (Touw River Estuary), the Serpentine which meanders between the Touw River, Island Lake and Rondevlei. The latter, a favourite venue for water-skiing and attracts enthusiasts from far and wide.

Recreational activities in Wilderness include hiking, mountain-biking, bird- and whale-watching, hang- and paragliding, horse riding, scenic drives, day tours, angling, boating and other water sports.
